Katniss's mother mental state is that she has gone terribly insane after the shocking death of her husband in a minning accident. She has become more lazy, not wanting to do anything around the house, and is relying on Katniss to take care of Prim and chores around the house. Katniss's mom is more independant as she almost never talks to anyone, she just does her own thing each day and sits around the house eating any food that is currently avalible in the house.

Since the death of her husband Katniss's mom has been in a state of shock. She just stays in her room all day and sleeps. She is no stateto supporther kids becuase she is so devasted about her husband death that occured in a minning acciedent. She never helps her children and has put all the pressure on Katniss to put food on the table. Katniss now has to do everything for the house hold. Without Katniis there would be no way to bring in food into the hosue becuase she is the only one who goes and hunts. Katniss is basically the mom of the familly as she basically takes careof her sister and mom now.
Since Katniss's father's death, her mother has never been truly there. For the first while she just sat on the bed not eating or sleeping, which really scared Prim. Katniss Being older has to now hunt, take care of her sister and still goto school. The only person helping her is Gale. Once Katniss is reaped though her mother begins to regain some sense that she has to protcet Prim and hope that Katniss makes it back.
